Understanding Transfer Fees
FX Markup — The difference between the mid-market exchange rate and the rate you're offered. This is often the largest hidden cost. A 1% markup on $10,000 = $100 in hidden fees.
Fixed Fee — A flat fee per transfer regardless of amount. Impacts small transfers more. A $30 fee on $500 is 6%, but on $10,000 it's only 0.3%.
Transfer Fee — A percentage-based fee on top of the exchange rate. Some providers charge 0.5-1.5% of the transfer amount.
Intermediary Bank Fees — For SWIFT wire transfers, intermediary banks may deduct $15-30 from your transfer. The recipient receives less than expected.
Receiving Fee — Some banks charge the recipient a fee for incoming international transfers. Typically $10-25 for wire transfers.
