DNS Record Types
A Record — Maps domain to an IPv4 address. The most basic record type.
example.com → 93.184.216.34
AAAA Record — Maps domain to an IPv6 address.
example.com → 2606:2800:220:1:248:1893:25c8:1946
CNAME Record — Alias pointing to another domain. Cannot be used at root (@).
www.example.com → example.com
MX Record — Directs email to mail servers. Priority determines preference order.
@ → mail.example.com (priority 10)
TXT Record — Text data for verification, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, etc.
@ → "v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all"
NS Record — Delegates a domain to nameservers. Usually set by registrar.
@ → ns1.example-dns.com
CAA Record — Specifies which CAs can issue certificates for your domain.
@ → 0 issue "letsencrypt.org"
Troubleshooting Tips
Records not working? DNS propagation takes 1-48 hours. Use dig example.com or dnschecker.org to verify.
Email not arriving? Verify MX records first, then check SPF and DMARC. Use mxtoolbox.com for diagnostics.
CNAME at root? Most DNS providers don't allow CNAME at the apex (@). Use an A record or ALIAS/ANAME if supported.
SSL issues? After changing DNS, wait for propagation before requesting SSL certificates.
